New Royal Mail prices, a step too far?

Have Royal Mail gone a step too far with their new prices for April 2013. Although headline prices for 1st and 2nd class have remained the same, prices for parcels have gone up, in some cases significantly. Parcels have now been broken into 3 sizes, small, medium and large, prices for large and medium parcels are often much higher than prices before April.

The one growth area for Royal Mail has been the parcels, largely due to Ebay and other online selling, these latest prices will drive many online sellers to use courier companies instead. Also, Royal Mail have abandoned the maximum compensation limit of £40, this is now £20 unless extra insurance is paid for.

A step to far for Royal Mail?

Yes it is a step too far. I now use Courier service which allows me to have online tracking for packages up to 5Kg for £6.50 with next day delivery. Royal Mail want over £12 for 2nd class service

It does seem that Royal Mail are happy to lose parcel business to the growing army of couriers. I believe that RM have interests in a couple of the courier companies, is it that they think it can be done cheaper than using the chain of Post Offices? More PO closures to come?
